Creators of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to make existing character gay
Superheroes Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman could be coming out of the closet in a forthcoming issue, according to their creators.
DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio announced at the Kapow Comic Convention in London on Sunday (20 May) that a character who was previously straight will now be ‘one of our most prominent gay characters.
The news comes as a surprise to fans of some of the world’s best loved superheroes, as DiDio had previously said it would not change the sexuality of its characters but would introduce more LGBT ones.
Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne seems to have been inspired by US President Barack Obama’s historic decision to back gay marriage, saying his policy on the issue ‘had evolved’, reported comic blog Bleeding Cool.
Speculation over which character will come out has flooded social networking sites.
While DiDio was tight lipped on who it would be, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, Courtney Simmons, let slip to ABC News that a ‘major’ character would be gay in a storyline in June.
Last month, Grant Morrison, who has been writing Batman stories for DC Comics since 2006, told Playboy that Bruce Wayne is ‘very, very gay’ and a ‘sexual deviant’.
The first openly gay mainstream superhero was Northstar, reinterpreted as gay by his creator John Byrne in the 1980s, but only officially stated as gay by writer Scott Lobdell in the 1990s.
Lobdell recently created a new gay DC character in the recent relaunched comic Teen Titans.
