Q We are a mature gay couple considering a two week stay in Martinique. We have been in several islands on the Caribbean and sometimes feel not welcomed in several places, specially in the British Virgin Islands. My question is:how is Martinique attitude towards gay people? Will we get nasty looks when I ask for a single bed on the hotel?Any advice or suggestion?
A I’ve not been to Martinique, but my partner and I have visited the nearby island of Guadeloupe another French Department “Outre-Mer”. Everyone there seemed very friendly and if anyone had any problem with us being gay, they certainly kept it to themselves. I don’t imagine you’ll have many problems as attitudes there seemed very French, very “Your business is yours, mine is mine.” I don’t recall getting nasty looks or poor service (at least none that seemed related to us being a male couple).
You should know that the two islands have very little in the way of gay bars, discos, saunas, gay beaches, gay organizations, etc. so if you’re looking for that sort of holiday somewhere else in the Caribbean is probably what you’re looking for.
But if you’re in the mood for gorgeous scenery, amazing beaches, delicious food and rum, awesome hikes in the mountains, then the French Caribbean is the way to go.
My partner and I both agreed that Guadeloupe was the best vacation we’ve ever had (we’ve both traveled extensively all over the world (and we both love Lisbon, btw).
We loved Guadeloupe so much we’re now planning our own trip to Martinique.
I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help, but I hope this helps a little… and moreover I hope you have a great trip.
