Tokyo Rainbow Pride is upon us and here’s what you can do to celebrate
Move over, cherry trees. This coming weekend there will be another colorful sight to see in Tokyo, Japan.
The capital of the island country will celebrate its LGBTI community with the annual Tokyo Rainbow Pride.
Expect a flamboyant parade and other events catered to gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people and allies.
‘I Have Pride‘ is the theme for 2019, a simple yet effective statement now that the country seems to be on its way to recognize same-sex marriages.
The parade
This year’s Pride will take place from 27 April to 6 May, with walking groups and floats taking to the streets of Shibuya and Harajuku on Sunday 28 April. The march will kick off at Yoyogi Park at 2pm, with more than 52 groups taking part and gathering from 1pm.
The festival will take place in Yoyogi Park on 28-29 April, offering food and drinks stalls, Pride merch and mental health counseling. The festivities will then stretch to the whole week with talks and parties.
The after parties
After the parade, there will be the official after party at Aisotope Lounge in Shinjuku Nichome on 28 April.
Time Out Tokyo also reports of other two parties, the Pride Festival After Party at Magnet by Shibuya109 taking place on 29 April, followed by the Rainbow Rooftop Party on 30 April at the same venue.
An all-femme Spindle Party will take place on 4 May, while Pride week will wrap up with the free-admission Pride Week Closing Party at Eagle Tokyo Blue on 5 May.
Tokyo Rainbow Pride releases official song
This year’s Pride has an official song for the first time ever.
The track, called No Question, is a collaboration between Japanese hip hop group m-flo and Tokyo Rainbow Pride.
