A love story featuring a gay couple has become the first to get approval from China’s film regulators.
The 2014 film ‘Seek McCartney’ was directed by Wang Chao.
The announcement that the regulators had approved the film for a theatrical release was made by Wang on his blog.
He said it was “a small step for the regulator and a big step for film makers”.
The film currently has no release date.
It is set up as a co-production between French and Chinese producers, and stars Han Geng and France’s Jeremie Elkaim.
Regulators in China are known for being harsh on gay-themed films.
There is no rating system, so all films are expected to be suitable to show to an audience of any ages.
Other films such as Brokeback Mountain have been banned, as well as other films with gay themes.
