Lesbians hold wedding in east China

Gay women openly hold a wedding ceremony in Wuhu, Anhui province, China

Two lesbians held a wedding ceremony openly in Wuhu in China’s eastern Anhui province on Saturday 27 October, according to Xinhua news agency.

It is the first public lesbian marriage ceremony in Wuhu, despite the fact that the Chinese government does not recognize same-sex marriage.

The couple, Zou Ji and Li Xuegin, held a two-hour ceremony in the banquet hall of a local hotel with 60 people attending.

‘This wedding is not just for fun. Many people don’t understand us but only we know what it feels like,’ said Zou Ji.

‘We have been preparing this wedding for a long time. We invited all the relatives and friends to our wedding. We bought delicate gift packages online and filled them with Dove chocolate and Eclairs sweets and sealed them with colorful ribbons.’

The couple made a slideshow about the story of their two-year relationship which they showed on a large screen at the wedding.

‘I spend the craziest amount of money in my life and I feel so happy,’ said Zou, who wore a tuxedo while her wife wore a bridal dress.

On an online post about the wedding, most commenters congratulated the couple but some said the couple are ‘abnormal’.
