Taiwan’s first out gay singer will be one of the hosts of the show
Asia’s first LGBT streaming service is going from strength to strength and has created original queer content.
Queer Taiwan is the first LGBT original series produced by GagaOOLala which launched last year.
The show is a docu-series taking a look at the range of LGBT issues in Taiwan.
‘The goal of producing Queer Taiwan is to showcase the uniqueness of the interviewed individuals and the causes they represent,’ said GagaOOLala’s founder, Jay Lin.
Through this series we expect to elevate the overall visibility of the LGBT communities locally and internationally.’
Taiwan’s first out singer, Jin, will host Queer Taiwan with Leo who is one half of the YouTube stars Fufuknows.
They’re tasked with interviewing key players behind each issue while giving voice to every side of the story.
The hosts while also offer their own point of views on issues based on their own experiences.
Marriage, drag, families and sex work
The first season of Queer Taiwan will tackle some meaty issues over its four episodes.
First up the boys will look at the marriage equality debate after the Legislative Yuan in May last year ruled that same-sex marriage should be made into law within two years.
Another two episodes will delve into Taiwan’s drag queen culture and meet with rainbow families in the country.
Then not shying away for controversial issues, Queer Taiwan will feature the organization ‘Hand Angels‘. The organization provides sexual services for people with disabilities.
Queer Taiwan sets sights on Asia
Queer Taiwan is only the second attempt by GagaOOLala to create original content. Last year it released the ‘Tale of the Lost Boy’ a Taiwanese-Filipino co-production feature film.
‘GagaOOLala is a service for Southeast Asia, which is arguably one of the most complicated regions in the world to market due to its linguistic, historic, economic, and cultural diversity, but yet it is this diversity that is so ripe with hidden characters and stories that excite us,’ said Jay Lin.
Queer Taiwan’s concept will expand to other country’s in the region including the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam and Hong Kong, under the name Queer Asia.
Production of the Queer Taiwan’s second season will start in April with a crowdfunding page looking for the support of the community to help finance this crucial project for the LGBT community in Asia.
Queer Taiwan’s first episode was released on 12 January on GagaOOLala and its Facebook page.
The full first season will be available for free on GagaOOLala in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
