Norway princess makes secret India trip to care for gay surrogate babies

New Delhi hospital mistakes Crown Princess Mette-Marit for palace nanny after she travelled to subcontinent to help gay fathers

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit secretly flew to India to care for a gay palace employee’s twin babies, born to a surrogate mother in the subcontinent.

The royal made the trip in late October after the worker and his husband, who are also her friends, couldn’t get a visa for the journey.

However, according to Reuters, she did not inform the Indian authorities of her identity and staff at the hospital in New Delhi where the infants were being cared for thought she was the palace nanny.

In yesterday’s (3 December) statement, Her Royal Highness said: ‘For me, this is about two babies lying alone in a New Delhi hospital.

‘I was able to travel and wanted to do what I could.’

The story explains why the princess had missed so many official engagements in Norway, including a parliamentary dinner.

According to the palace, the fathers were able to fly out to India in November and have now returned to their home country with the babies.

Surrogacy is currently a hot topic in Norway, with the government discouraging people from paying women to carry their babies.

However, Mette-Marit stood by her decision and added: ‘Sometimes life presents you with situations with few good solutions. This was one of those.

‘There is an important debate doing on about surrogacy and this was not meant as taking a side.’
