Brnabic is the first openly gay politician and the first woman to serve as Prime Minister in Serbia
The partner of Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has given birth to a baby boy.
Her office has announced the same-sex couple has welcomed a boy named Igor on 20 February.
‘Ana Brnabic is one of the first prime ministers whose partner has given birth while in office… and the first in the world in a same-sex couple,’ her office said in a statement.
The statement also explained the mother, Milica Djurdjic and the baby are ‘doing fine’.
Brnabic met Ðurdic at a gay bar in Belgrade, the Serbian capital. Ðurdic works as a doctor and became pregnant through artificial insemination.
Serbia doesn’t recognize same-sex couples
Brnabic is the first openly gay politician and the first woman to serve as PM in Serbia.
Former PM Aleksandar Vucic designated Brnabic as his successor when he was inaugurated as President of Serbia in 2017.
Many saw her appointment as a surprise as Serbian doesn’t formally recognize same-sex couples. Moreover, same-sex couples can’t adopt children.
However, the parliament could introduce a bill on civil unions soon, a decision aimed to bring Serbia closer to other EU countries allowing same-sex partnerships.
