Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru has elected its first openly gay leader.

Adam Price won the leadership challenge from the party’s incumbent leader Leanne Wood. He received 2,863 votes, while Wood got 1,286.

Price served as MP from 2001 to 2010. In 2016, he went on to sit in the Welsh Assembly.

Adam Price adopted a baby with his partner
The 50-year-old, who has just become the dad of an American baby with his partner, is the first out gay politician to serve as party leader in Wales.

‘It is a huge honor to be elected leader of Plaid Cymru,’ he said.

‘Firstly, my thanks to Leanne Wood for her hard work since 2012 and to her and Rhun ap Iorwerth for such a good campaign.’

‘Secondly, to those who supported me, and all our party’s members for taking part in the election.’

‘The work of all of us starts today’
Price also thanked the staff of Plaid Cymru.

‘Thanks, then, to the party’s staff for administering the election so well and arranging all its events. The work of all of us starts today. By rolling up our sleeves together, we will now win a new Wales,’ he said.

He is officially the first openly gay party leader in Wales. However, in 1998 newspapers outed Labour’s candidate Ron Davies, who was set to become the first First Secretary for Wales.
