Tel Aviv celebrated the LGBTI community during the annual Pride, taking place today (14 June).

250.000 Pridegoers took to the streets of the city, considered by many a safe haven in Israel for gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people.

The parade
The day kicked off with an event called the Happening, a drag queens performance.

The parade then took to Ben Zion Boulevard, where organizations had set up booths highlighting issues including animal rights, โ€˜pinkwashingโ€™ of Israelโ€™s policies in the West Bank, and asexuality.

Moreover, this year the LGBTI community center has asked people to use the hashtag Outlaw when posting photos from Pride to show solidarity with the cause.

In a statement, the Israel Police said security measures are taking place in Tel Aviv on Friday afternoon for the parade and celebrations.

โ€˜Hundreds of police officers will secure the event and border police will be on route. Roads in the area will be closed throughout the afternoon,โ€™ the police said.

Neil Patrick Harris was the ambassador for Tel Aviv Pride
American actor Neil Patrick Harris has joined Tel Aviv Pride as International Ambassador. He attended the parade with his husband David Burtka.

Harris, famous for his portrayal of Barney in CBS show How I Met Your Mother, has said that โ€˜Tel Aviv has become a symbol of the openness and acceptance of the LGBTQ community on the world stageโ€™.

โ€˜We are honored to be in Israel for the first time and have the honor to take part in this beautiful celebration and to stand with the LGBTQ community in Israel and around the world, especially on the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots,โ€™ he also said in a statement.
