LGBTI rights leaders from around the world to speak at event as part of Toronto’s WorldPride celebrations in 2014
The event, organized as part of the WorldPride celebrations, which next year are in Toronto, Canada, will see presenters from 60 countries.
International LGBTI activists will debate human rights around the world at the event from 25 to 27 June.
Hundreds of LGBTI rights leaders from around the world are expected to speak, including: Russian activist and journalist Masha Gessen; Ugandan LBGTI activist Frank Mugisha; Kenyan human rights lawyer Justice Monica Mbaru; Venezuelan trans activist Tamara Adrián; and Canadian global HIV leader Stephen Lewis.
Panelists will address issues including education, youth, HIV and AIDS, sex work, trans rights, employment, aging and more.
‘The Conference takes place during a time of increased awareness of the challenges LGBTI communities face around the world,’ says Brenda Crossman, conference co-chair.
‘While the upcoming Sochi Olympics have highlighted the situation in Russia, it is just one example of the myriad of human rights issues affecting our communities.’
The overall WorldPride 2014 event in Toronto will run from 20 to 29 June.
Organizers told GSN they want to leave a lasting legacy so WorldPride prospers in other host cities in future years.
The event is being presented by Pride Toronto, long-term organizers of the city’s annual LGBTI festival.
