LGBTI rights advocates celebrated in New York City
The oldest and largest LGBTI legal group in the US celebrated LGBTI rights advocates at the 2019 National Liberty Awards.
Lambda Legal hosted this year’s award show at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers, in New York City on Thursday (9 May).
The evening honored Kate Kendell, the former Executive Director of National Center for Lesbian Rights, and Baker McKenzie, a partner for both LGBTI youth advocates and the Lambda Legal Youth in Out-of-Home CareProject.
The two were praised for their years of commitment in working to further LGBTI rights in the US, Instinct Magazine reports.
Comedian Dana Goldberg was on hand to provide some laughs for attendees, followed by a performance from pop singer VINCINT.
Other guests included Jeffrey Marsh, Javier Munoz, Yuval David, along with three of Ru Paul’s Drag Race alumni, Peppermint, Yuhua Hamasaki and Alexis Michelle.
DJ Pamela Katz provided music for the after party.
Working for LGBTI rights
This year’s National Liberty Awards also provided the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the hosts.
Lambda Legal have great deals of respect from fellow LGBTI rights activists and supporters in the US.
The nonprofit organization accepts pro bono work select cases. They have worked on some of the most high profile cases affecting the LGBTI community and people living with HIV.
Lambda Legal’s recent cases include challenging Trump administration rules on healthcare which discriminate against women and LGBTI people, and fighting a proposal which would have allowed faith-based adoption agencies in Tennessee to reject same-sex parents on the grounds of religious beliefs.
The group does not receive any government funding, and relies on donations to fund their work.
