US gay media advocacy organization announce they will be honoring an international LGBTI rights activist for the first time
Three British celebs, two Russian activists and an Indian actor are among the nominees in an inaugural international honor awarded by GLAAD.
The US media advocacy organization announced they will be giving out an award later this year to recognize the work done by activists around the world.
The nominees for the International Advocate for Change Award include:
- Boy Abunda (Filipino TV host)
- Manny de Guerre (Russian organizer of the Side by Side LGBT Film Festival)
- Jane Hill (BBC journalist and broadcaster)
- Charlie Condou (British actor)
- Sophie Ward (British actor and writer)
- Imran Khan (Indian actor and LGBT ally)
- Anton Krasovsky (Russian journalist)
- Daniela Mercury (Brazilian singer)
- Bishop Christopher Senyonjo (Ugandan clergyman and LGBT ally)
- Florencia Trinidad (Argentinian transgender actress)
- Jin Xing (Chinese transgender actress and dancer).
Anthony Watson, the first British GLAAD national board member, said: ‘As we make enormous strides in LGBT equality across the United States, in both policy and culture, it becomes even more important to support LGBT people outside the United States.
‘GLAAD operates in a global context and our critical work transcends national boundaries. As such, it’s only fitting that we honor global LGBT citizens and allies who make a significant and demonstrable difference in our community around the world.’
The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles on 12 April and in New York on 3 May.
