Norfolk Island in Australia, could legalise same-sex marriage this year, as plans to introduce legislation have been lodged.
The self-governing territory could see a major hike in tourist numbers, if same-sex marriage becomes legal.
The legislation which is yet to be introduced, would establish a new law to work alongside the Federal Marriage Act, but not altering it, with the hopes of protecting it against federal intervention.
If same-sex marriage becomes law on the island, it would mean Australian gay and lesbian couples could marry on Australian territory.
The Guardian reports that, based on the number of Australian same-sex couples travelling to New Zealand to marry, Norfolk Island’s economy could see a $12 million boost.
Australia’s High Court last December overturned legislation allowing same-sex marriages in the Australian Capital Territory.
