A UN expert is set to assess discrimination against LGBT people in Argentina.
Vitit Muntarbhorn, the human rights expert who specialises in investigating violence and discrimination based on sexual and gender identity for the UN, will carry out the study which will see him visit the country.
Muntarbhorn has said that he will look in-depth into policies in the country that stand to provide protection for the LGBT community.
“I am particularly interested in legislative reforms and policies that have been implemented in Argentina to protect people targeted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and to create an inclusive environment,” he said.
The ten-day long investigation will begin on the first of March.
Muntarbhorn will visit federal and local government offices, as well as LGBT organisations within Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Mendoza.
“The visit will allow me to identify not only good practices but also issues for which I will provide concrete recommendations to fight violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” Muntarbhorn said.
The LGBT watchdog faced being pushed out last year after a group of African states proposed a vote to have the position removed.
The attempt was defeated in a narrow vote with 77 countries voting in favour and 84 against, with 16 abstentions.
870 human rights organisations from 157 countries around the world had signed an open letter urging the governments represented in the General Assembly to continue the expert’s work.
