Gays and lesbians in Italy worry about their future

Fear life as senior more difficult for gays than heterosexuals

Rome(ANSA) – Homosexuals in Italy fear their future will be more difficult than that of heterosexuals, according to a survey released Wednesday.

Fully 55% of gays and lesbians surveyed say they are concerned about their future in Italy, and 52% said that being homosexual and aging is more difficult than it is for straight people.

These results come from a survey on homosexuality and seniors in Italy, conducted by sociologist Raffaele Lelleri on behalf of the the union CGIL and Equality Italy.

More than 2,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexuals (LBGT) living in Italy took part in the survey, which also found that 38% said life will become worse as they age.

The survey, presented at a conference on aging and homosexuality, also found that 23% of those surveyed were confident that the future will be better than today.

And 40% of those who responded to the survey said that they believe the conditions for elderly LGBT in Italy probably have improved compared with conditions 10 years ago, while more than 30% said conditions are probably unchanged.
